A Few Notes – 8-24-18
Hello Brethren!
I hope you’ve had a positive week!
Just some thoughts… “Do not remove the ancient landmark which your fathers have set” (Proverbs 22:28).
The story of the Rechabites in Jeremiah 35 is a poignant one.
The Rechabites were the sons of Jonadab, the son of Rechab, and their wives, their sons and their daughters. God had a very specific point He wanted to make, using this family, so He had Jeremiah call on them and bring them to “house of the LORD.”
He was to bring them into the “House of the LORD,” and offer them wine to drink… But, they had would not drink it!
They wouldn’t drink it because their father, Jonadab, had set some guidelines in their family that they admirably remained faithful to. One of those guidelines was, to “drink no wine.” Therefore, they refused the wine and held to their family traditions!
The point God was making was a powerful one! He was showing how faithful the Rechabites were to their forefather, yet the whole nation of Israel would not listen to their God, even though He tried repeatedly to warn them and show them the right way!
While, obedience to God is the focus of the story, it’s amazing how God used the faithfulness to the family traditions to prove His point.
As we continue developing and growing healthy families in God’s Church, it is our job to hold on to the right and good traditions we’ve learned from our families, throw out any bad habits we may have experienced growing up, and build new godly traditions to pass down to our children and grandchildren. If we do this, maybe we can be esteemed and blessed in a way similar to the Rechabites (Jer 35:18-19), and even more so in the Kingdom of God!
